Two Proposals Considered for Elyria Mall Redevelopment

(Elyria) For more than a decade people in Lorain County have wondered when, if at all, something would be done with the struggling Midway Mall in Elyria. Well, that day is approaching. The Lorain County Port Authority, which currently owns the old mall, is considering a pair of proposals for redevelopment of the property. And two public meetings are planned to discuss the two plans. The first meeting is this Thursday February 15 at 6 p.m. in the food court of the mall. The topic will be the proposal from the Center for Food Innovation, which is a non-profit organization that wants to transform the mall into an agricultural center. The Garden would focus on growing food to be supplied throughout northeast Ohio, in addition to residential and business space.

The second proposal comes from Industrial Commercial Properties. ICP has a couple of ideas for the future on the Midway Mall location. One would be to create a multi-tenant business park using the current mall building. ICP's other option would completely redevelop the property for one tenant, similar to an Amazon fulfillment center for example. The company says that it has also received positive feedback on proposal to remake the old mall into a health, wellness, and industrial innovation park. The meeting for the Industrial Commercial Properties plans is on Wednesday February 21st at 6 p.m. in the mall's food court.

Lorain County Port Authority Director Jim Miller says the final decision will be made by the Port Authority's Board, but he says it's important to hear from the public about the future of the Midway Mall, which he refers to Lorain County's front door due to its proximity to the Ohio Turnpike, I-90, and Route 57.
