While a lot of attention is paid to the border the U.S. shares with Mexico, the highest number of illegal crossings last year occurred well north of there – at the U.S.-Canadian border.

Border crossings from Canada into upstate New York, New Hampshire and Vermont reached a record number last year, as more than 12,200 migrants were apprehended, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. That figure represents a staggering 240 percent increase over the previous year, when only 3,578 migrants were arrested, data reveals.

That’s not to say all of the migrants are fleeing from Canada. Because the border is so long, it’s not adequately staffed and there’s no fencing, says New York Assemblyman Billy Jones. So many migrants who make it to Mexico purchase plane tickets to Montreal or Toronto, and then head south to cross the border, he says.
