A lack of sleep is a given for any parent with young children - but it's nothing compared to what penguins go through.

A new study of Antarctica's Chinstrap penguins found that parents sleep for just a few seconds at a time while taking care of their young.

The birds nod off thousands of times a day, for roughly 4 seconds or so. But these 'microsleeps' add up to 11 hours of shuteye per day.

Next up, scientists want to see if 'microsleeping' continues outside of breeding season, and if it carries the same benefits as continuous sleep
