DNA found in the United Kingdom reveals at least two genetically different groups of humans were alive at the end of the last ice age, scientists say.

The discovery came about when researchers analyzed DNA taken from the remains of two people found in caves dating back to the last ice age, which began about 15,500 years ago, says the University of New York's Dr. Sophy Charlton. Upon comparing the two, scientists discovered they had vastly different genetic makeups -- in addition to having different ancestries, diets and cultures, Charlton says.

"We can see that there are two different genetic ancestry present in Britain during this late glacial period, which is perhaps not what we expected to find," Charlton says.
