With the fifth pick in the 2019 NBA Draft the Cleveland Cavaliers selected Darius Garland, a 6-2 / 174 lbs guard out of Vanderbilt University. Garland is son of former NBA player Winston Garland, who averaged 9.4 points and 4.7 assists over a 7 year career after being selected in the second round of the 1987 NBA Draft out of Missouri State.

Darius Garland is a skilled shooting guard with unlimited range on his pull-up jump shot who is coming off of a 6-game freshman season that was cut short by a meniscus injury. Garland was a McDonald's All-American who staked his claim as the top point guard prospect in the high school class of 2018 in a variety of settings. The young prospect finished his career at Brentwood Academy ranked as a consensus top-15 prep prospect. The Gary, Indiana native averaged 16.2 points and 2.6 assists per game, but was not afforded the chance to showcase his game in SEC play, although he displayed the jump shooting ability and offensive instincts that separated him as the prep level in his brief time with the Vanderbilt Commodores.
