Westerly Storage Tunnel Toured

Cleveland - The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District celebrated Infrastructure Week with a tunnel tour for local media and elected officials on Wednesday.

The Westerly Storage Tunnel (WST) is part of Project Clean Lake, the Sewer District’s 25-year, $3 billion infrastructure investment program. The two-mile long tunnel runs beneath Tremont, Ohio City and Detroit-Shoreway neighborhoods and is the fourth of seven tunnels.

WST is a $135 million project designed to capture 300 million gallons of combined sewage annually, preventing flows from entering the Cuyahoga River. Today, the combined sewer overflow (CSO) at Walworth Run discharges more than 40 times in a typical year.

The project, which is still just six months into work, is expected to be finished by 2022 at the latest. You can see video of WTAM's Kyle Cornell's trip into the tunnel below.
