(Cleveland) - Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, when he unveils his proposed two-year budget on Thursday, will propose that it includes an increase of Ohio's gasoline tax from 28 cents per gallon to 46 cents per gallon, an increase of 18 cents. This would be the first increase in Ohio's gasoline tax in over 15 years.
DeWine announced the 18 cent figure in an interview Wednesday with WTAM's Mike Trivisonno.
The governor and others say that millions of dollars more are needed just to continue the current maintenance of state roads in Ohio. DeWine said on WTAM that the current tax rate isn't enough to cover maintenance, in part because there's less tax revenue due to cars being more fuel efficient, and and part because of the millions of dollars in bond debt that the Ohio Department of Transporation and the Ohio Turnpike have to repay.
