CLEVELAND --  Project ChildSafe Cleveland has kicked off in Cleveland today.

"It's an initiative that promotes the importance of responsible firearm ownership and creating a culture of firearm safety," says Justin Herdman, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, "(It's intended) to prevent accidents, to prevent firearm thefts and to prevent misuse of firearms in violent crime."

The initiative is a joint project between the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio, and some local leaders. As part of this campaign, local organizations will help spread messages about the importance of proper firearms storage and work with Project ChildSafe to distribute thousands of free firearm safety kits, including a gun lock, to local residents.
