(Cleveland) - Officials with the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Justice Center have announced changes to make the facility more safe and secure.
The changes come on the heels of a January 8 riot which left the facility with $200,000 in damage. Six teenagers were charged with aggravated rioting, vandalism, disorderly conduct and inciting violence.
The Juvenile Court has now contracted with Cuyahoga Community College to provide training for new guards at the juvenile detention facility.
Ten officers have gone through the academy and have been hired on in the past two months. The Juvenile Justice Center is also in search of a new director.
A diversion program is also being implemented for low level offenders which would place them into foster care or the care of relatives and offer them services which would allow them to go home much sooner, according to Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court Administrative Judge Kristin Sweeney.
